Biography:
The artwork of Kelvy Bird addresses felt, often silent, emotional tensions
between people and their environments. The "Pulse" images speak to the
nature of emergence the bloom, or emission, of human presence from an
energetic field. They are about locating an essential heartbeat and
encourage participation by evoking an experiential response. Her "Grid" series, with irregular, hand-drawn lines and use of limited palette, focuses
inquiry into the relationship of neighboring parts. Some pieces present
intact scenarios; others present an unfolding storyline through audience
participation by allowing the rearrangement of sections to reveal changing,
puzzle-like sub-grids. "Combinations" explore the influence of atmosphere on
human behavior. With site-specific groupings of richly textured encaustic
panels, the arrangements subtly increase or relax the vibrancy of a room.
All of Bird¹s work reaches the viewer in an intuitive way; the meaning of a
piece springs to life only as it activates and involves memory, imagination,
and possibility.
Bird was raised in the Hudson River Valley and currently works in
Somerville, MA at Vernon Street Studios. She holds a BFA in painting and a
BA in art history from Cornell University, where she graduated with
distinction. Bird volunteers for activities that increase the presence of
art in the public sphere. She also works as a process and graphic
facilitator in the field of organizational learning on aspects of leadership, collective intelligence, diversity, innovation, and calling. Her
paintings are exhibited in the greater Boston area and are in corporate and
private collections around the country.
