In 2011 alone, the Somerville Homeless Coalition prevented 225 individuals from becoming homeless through their case management and housing program services. 86 of these individuals were children. Additionally, through programming like Project SOUP, 1,400 people had access to food. Perhaps what's more impressive than these statistics is that through these services, SHC is able to prevent one family from becoming homeless with as little as $833.

Created as an annual sale of knitted goods to benefit SHC, The Wrap Around Project has grown into a yearlong campaign to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in our area. Somerville's homeless population is comprised of elders, single working adults, disabled individuals, and many families with children from newborns to teenagers. The typical homeless family that SHC serves is a mother with two children.

The Nave has a number of exciting events planned throughout the year to celebrate the work of SHC, and support its mission. We hope that you will join us in wrapping our arms around our community!

The Great Yarn Swap
Saturday, May 19, 10-5 pm
Nave Gallery
Held in conjunction with the Nave's semi-annual Flea Market

C'mon. You know you have it...bags (dare we even say trunks?) filled with yarn, fabric, books, patterns, needles, and so much more, hiding away in corners, just waiting to be used...

It's okay! Some projects are better left undone! But here's your chance to clean up your space, come find some hidden goods, and get re-inspired.

Donate your items to The Great Yarn Swap. This event will be an open exchange of all things related to fiber. The items will be free, but we do ask for a door donation of canned goods to support SHC's Project Soup, its local food pantry that provides a weekly community dinner and also delivers groceries to individuals, families, elderly, disabled and homebound people in our neighborhood.

Yarnstorm Perry Park
August, TBD

Perry Park (300 block, Washington Street) in Somerville will experience an artistic fiber art make over in late Summer as knitters, crocheters and yarn enthusiasts storm the park and cover trees, benches, light poles, fences and more in colorful yarn creations.

We will update this page closer to the event and let you know all the details. In the meantime, if you have any questions, or would like to be added to a yarntormers list, please email Margaret Ryan at

Threads Bared: Art Inspired By Fiber
Exhibit Dates
November 10-December 16
(held in conjunction with the Wrap Around Sale)

From grass to bamboo to wool and silk, and yes, even to plastic, fiber is an essential part of our lives, keeping us clothed, warm, holding our food, and decorating our homes.

"Threads Bared" is an exploration of the tactile wonder of fiber. Using traditional and non-traditional methods and materials, fiber artists unravel, piece together, and bare the very threads that make up our lives. Playful, patterned, colorful, and flat-out crazy, all themes will be considered, and experimental pieces are highly encouraged.
